Healios commissioned by Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust

SOUTHAMPTON, UK, September 2016 - Healios is delivering new ways of care closer to home with Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust (AWP) using digital capabilities. Since July 2016, those affected by psychosis, as well as their families (carers), have been able to utilise Healios’ online family intervention service – providing greater flexibility, convenience and choice for how, when and where service users and their families wish to engage with treatment.

Prior to Healios, getting the family together in person during the weekday for their family intervention appointment could be challenging due to managing differing schedules and conflicts with other daily responsibilities such as work, school, and family members living in different locations. Consequently, families are sometimes unable to benefit from family intervention, an otherwise highly effective treatment option.

AWP are supporting their service users by integrating Healios’ online family intervention service into their Bath and North East Somerset (BaNES) Early Intervention in Psychosis team and BaNES Recovery team. Healios’ digital services provide families with the option to participate in online family intervention from their computer, tablet or smartphone - improving access and convenience to ensure treatment is available wherever service users need it.

“I am so pleased to have been introduced to the high quality family interventions developed and delivered by Healios; I think they are brilliant. I am delighted to be now working with Richard Andrews and Healios practitioners alongside AWP colleagues in BaNES to promote this innovative way of working, filling a gap by increasing the range of family intervention available”, said Gina Smith, Consultant Nurse, Family Work for Psychosis at AWP.

Richard Andrews, Founder and CEO of Healios commented, “It’s great that we’re working with AWP across the spectrum of those affected by psychosis, whether its day one of diagnosis or someone who has had the illness for many years. This gives us the opportunity to change many more lives. Not only are we able to make someone’s entire treatment journey more accessible, we’re now taking families who have struggled to come together and we’re providing them with an option that works for their own personal lifestyle.”

Family intervention is a form of psychological therapy based on bringing the whole family together to improve treatment outcomes. Well proven with strong clinical evidence, family intervention delivers significant benefits for service users, families and the health service as a whole. With an increased focus on mental health service provision through such measures as the Parity of Esteem, Early Intervention in Psychosis Access and Waiting Time Standards and additional funding released by the Department of Health, mental health is working towards parity with physical health conditions.
